Girl's gotta have a goal
Today, I spied one of our Grade 7 girls wearing a tee shirt:
Forget Princess
I Wanna be a Vampire
Um, yeah. We totally know who to blame for that one. But it got me thinking. I pretty much missed the whole wanting to be a princess thing. Maybe it's a generational thing, because there was no Disney Princess juggernaut when I was a girl, but I wanted to be Jo March or Anne Shirley or Mary Lennox. Princesses held little interest for me. And when I was 12, the only vampire around was Barnabus from Dark Shadows. I certainly knew plenty of girls who thought he was teh sexy, but the one time I saw the show itself, it featured a young groom calling his recently deceased bride from the grave with noticeably poor results. I was traumatized. So, it wasn't until I was 40 that I really got hooked on something that featured vampires. (Yes, I read Interview with a Vampire and several of the sequels, but hooked? No.) That something, of course, was Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
But, honestly, I never wanted to be a vampire. Slay them? Sure. Have an angsty relationship with them? Guilty as charged. Make a house fall down while shagging them?? Oh, baby. But I never wanted to be one.
And if I did want to be one, I certainly wouldn't want to be one that sparkles. Just sayin'.
So, a question to my 3 readers. Would you or have you ever thought you would want to be a vampire? Why or why not?

Even in my brief Anne Rive phase I never wanted to be a vampire. At best I wanted to write about them (which is also a sort of worst).
Er, that's Anne RICE.
Very interesting question! Would you be surprised to learn that I've given this a significant amount of thought already? No, didn't think so.
I always end up coming down on the side of "no." When I read the Rice novels, I was struck by how the vampires always ended up physically the same as the day they were turned. (I'm thinking there was a part where Claudia kept cutting her hair, but every morning it would be back the same way.) That terrifies me, because if I'd been turned at any point in the last 14 years I'd be fat for the rest of my unlife.
The Buffyverse struck me differently. I think seeing everyone around you age and die would be depressing if you had any connections to the human world, even if you were evil. And it seemed to me that the vampires who had those kinds of connections -- even if they were superficial -- were more likely to survive because they possessed the ability to adapt. (With a few exceptions like Kakistos and The Master.)
And while I'm very much a night person, I don't fancy keeping to the shadows and never feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin. And to be honest, if I'm a vampire that CAN go in the sun, I don't want to sparkle. I've seen myself with body glitter, and it's not attractive.
I have never wanted to be a vampire. For one thing, I like daylight and sunshine BEST OF ALL. Also, really, the whole thing grosses me out.
Best. Blog. Ever.
I lol'd.
Nope can't say that I did.
However, I wanted Frank Langella's Dracula to bite me and then I wanted Gary Oldman's Dracula to bite me which would naturally lead to being a vampire. I guess I just wanted the vampire sex without the resulting vampirism.
